SA government: drink too much, you’re asking for trouble

The government of South Australia has launched a campaign to warn of the consequences of excessive drinking.

“We have no qualms about the graphic nature of these commercials, because what they show is no different to what actually happens far too often,” said minister for health and substance abuse John Hill.

The ‘Drink too much, you’re asking for trouble’ ad series, targeted at 18 to 39 year old men and 18-29 year old women, depicts three different scenarios. In the first, two men are arrested after a booze-fuelled assault.

In the second execution, targeted at young women, rumours are spread about a girl who has collapsed in a toilet after binge drinking.

The third shows a woman receiving attention from paramedics for alcohol poisoning.

In the fourth ad, a father shoos his daughter away from the bathroom as he heaves into the toilet bowl.

Radio ads are running in support, which are also available on the

Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia’s website.

The campaign builds on the previous ‘Drink too much, it gets ugly’ message which ran last year.

“We really want young people to know that they are putting themselves and others at risk when they get drunk and that just four standard drinks double your risk of alcohol-related injury,” said Hill.

The minister quoted statistics that a third of all falls and drownings in Australia are attributable to alcohol, and every year in South Australia there are around 7000 hospitalisations and 300 deaths associated with alcohol.
